As far as the first three chapters are concerned, I'd have to disagree with everyone who's stated that the book is hard to get into. I found the introductory chapters extremely intriguing. As much as the book mentions swimming, it left me to wonder if it's perhaps some kind of foreshadowing for events that are to come later.
ReplyDeleteConcering Pi's character, I take him as a little shy. He doesn't appear to be very outspoken; it's like he only says something when he's spoken to. I took him as intelligent and outgoing, as well as very obedient. Intelligent because of his study on sloths; I loved reading about that. He also spoke about how well he did in school, which doesn't exactly depend completely on intelligence, but I'm guessing that intelligence sure helps. He took to swimming quickly and didn't seem to complain about his lessons three times a week. I also found it very interesting that he was named after a swimming pool. At first I wondered if his name had some kind of deeper meaning, and it made me laugh to find out that he was named after a pool.
After reading the first three chapter in LOP, my thoughts of the Pi's cahracter was that is a type of guy that wants to be different from his peers.I had the feeling that not only did his family not like swimming, but the majority also did not like swimming and I believe this may be part of the reason why is so attracted it.
ReplyDeleteHe also became attracted to the sloth, which people ususally are not too interest nor cares about the sloth's habits and all. The sloth is so interesting to him that he finds out out how fast it moves per hour to how keen each of its senses are. He also talks about his time in a hospital in Mexico and how the people were so kind to him. I wondered what happened to him that would put him into the hospital? It seems the character went through much pain in the past and i wondered how this will make him stronger.
I think that he is way to hyper, her never seems to just shut up and get to the point he rambles, and never seems to really fininish anything before jumping to the next topic, like the hospital insadent that came from no where and left in the same manner.. so what happened? or why? he just kinda leaves things. I guess thats good in a way of moving along but its really just useless information that is not needed. i do like his attention to detail and how he is willing to find out all the facts about a topic that intrest him, such as the sloth.
ReplyDeleteWell it seems that when he finds something interesting, he will grow passionate about it. Like the sloth thing. It was totally random, but he went into great detail about it and how much he admired it. It was almost as if the Three-toed sloth was his role model. He is also not afraid of death. He keeps on talking about how he's suffered so much, and it just makes me wonder: what happened?? Hopefully he'll talk more about his suffering later. I do agree with Tim that he does jump from topic to topic and it is a little annoying, but that is what keeps the reader wanting to read more and find answers to all the questions he or she has. He also goes all into talking about swimming. He really loves it and has no problem being named after a pool. I thought that it was pretty strange, but oh well. who names their son after a pool? Anyways, he mentioned that he studied religion, but didn't go into depth about it, so i hope to read more about it later. He seems pretty intelligent and willing to take up challenges easily. Like swimming. His family never wanted to learn how to swim, but he was all excited about it even though it was dangerous. So yeah, hopefully i answered the prompt correctly..
ReplyDeleteFrom reading the first three chapters of Life of Pi, Pi seems to have a very unique personality. I found it interesting that he had a double-major in both religious studies and zoology. Religion and science don't really go hand-in-hand, and it is interesting that Pi found himself mixing the two majors up. Usually, religion and science are not easily tied together.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I was really interested about Richard Parker. Pi seemed to have great feeling for this person, and also seems to be deeply hurt by him. I liked the sentence when Pi said "they are nightmares mostly, but nightmares tinged with love". Pi makes odd references to two things again that don't seem like they belong together but he also says it in a way that makes sense. i have found myself having nightmares similar to what he describes. Lastly, right after speaking of Richard he talks about his stay in the Mexico hospital. A big shift in the chapter. I want to know more...
After reading the first three chapters of "Life od Pi," it seems as he has a lot of stories to tell. Sounds like he can take a fond memory and tell it as if he was there again. He talks about a lot of random things such as the sloth, Richard Parker, to how he was in the hospital. He just jumps from topic to topic out of no where. The topics also have nothing to do with one another which makes it a challenge to read. His writing pretty much makes you forget what you were just reading after he shifts to a new topic randomly.
ReplyDeleteFrom reading the first 3 chapters of Life of Pi, Pi seems to be very patient and has an interesting personality. Seems smart for just attending high school one year and majoring in zoology and religious studies. How he would go off topic about different subjects became annoying but got me interested in how his stories began.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the first three chapters of life of pi, I think that pi is a very interesting young man. I love that he was named after a famous pool in france, thats completely awesome, though it makes me wonder how his name is pronounced. I think that he is a thoughtful young man, who is interested in what others neglect. His family didn't like the water so he dutifully took swimming lessons from Mammaji, sloth's are generally ignored and yet he chose them as his senior study project. He seems very focused on details, especially about the things he enjoys, for example, how fast a sloth moves in comparison to how fast a cheetah moves.
ReplyDeleteIn the first three chapters, Pi is portrayed as a very successful, intelligent person. This can be seen when he describes all the academic awards he recieved while he was in school. He must be very proud of his success; he sounded rather snotty when he was talking about his awards. The fact that Pi is a religious studies major portrays him as a very insightful person.
ReplyDeletePi shows so much emotion through the stories that he tells. Whether he's suffering, or excited about telling the story he fully explains how he feels. I like the way he writes because he is fairly descriptive and it lets me vision it. From all the achievements that he has listed you can tell he's a very intelligent man. Although from the context he doesn't seem modest, but I guess with that many achievements who wouldn't show off. Zoology and Religious studies is a twist, you definately don't hear that everyday. I also thought that it was informative and interesting on how he decided to tell the story of how he got his name, even though the whole chapter was about different pools.
ReplyDeleteI liked that he compared his life to a memento mori painting. It shows where he feels like he stands in life and how he feels about it. "When you've suffered a great deal in life, each additional pain is both unbearable and trifling."
I'm very excited to read the rest of the book, because I was hooked only reading the first three chapters.
I thought pi was an interesting person after reading the first three chapters. From his name to his double major it seems that he is someone to catch one’s attention. Having a name of a swimming pool isn’t that common. Who would think of having a kid named after a pool. I thought it was interesting how he double major in religious studies and zoology. Two very time consuming majors but he manage to pull it off. Pi is very smart as well as cocky, bragging about his awards so everyone knows he has won them all.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the first three chapters of the book, I have to say that I am gladly surprised at how much I liked it. We are just learning the basics of Pi's character, and already, I love what kind of energy he brings to the story. He is an extremely intelligent person, telling from his double-major Bachelor's degree from the University of Toronto. Especially when his majors happen to be religious studies and zoology--interesting combination.
ReplyDeleteI love how he begins chapter three, simply with "I was named after a swimming pool." And he wasn't lying, his full name, Piscine Molitor Patel, originated from the name of a swimming pool in Paris. I am very excited to see what this story unfolds to, I have a feeling that with a character like Pi, there are going to be a lot of interesting events.
The first three chspters of lop rely gets the reader thinking. It is very intresting how much information your able to gather in only a few pages. It makes Pi sound lkke a very adventures person. Taking chalenges that no one else in his family would do such as learn to swim.
ReplyDeleteHe also seems to have a thirst and dedication to knowledge that is neverending. He loves challenge and adventure and is very dedicated to success. He is a very respectful chid. He seems to have a connection with nature and a faith in God that will carry a tone throughout the book.
I am very interested in Pi's unique perception of life. Right off the bat, at the beginning of the first chapter, he reveals that something has caused him to suffer, something so great that it has "left [him] sad and gloomy" (Martel 3). We don't know what traumatizing experience he's endured, but only that his academic and spiritual pursuits have healed him. I am eager to learn what happened to him, and why there is a picture of a boy in a boat with a tiger on the cover of the book.
ReplyDeleteI would describe Pi as adventurous, conflicted, and hungry. He is full of insight and emotion, and seems to have somewhat of a yearning to live the life of a three toed sloth. He, and this book, intrigue me.
